Te mapa
Varanasi follows a crescent-shaped bend of the Ganges, on its western bank. The city's riverfront faces east toward sunrise across the water, while the opposite bank remains mostly empty sandbank and floodplain. That contrast between a densely built bank and an open one is the clearest feature of any Varanasi map poster.
Along the river, a series of ghats (stone steps leading down to the water) line the bank for several kilometres. They include Dashashwamedh, the setting of the evening aarti ceremony, and Manikarnika, the main cremation ghat. Behind them, the old city is a tight network of narrow lanes, too small for most vehicles, that wind toward the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the markets.
The city's name comes from the Varuna and Assi rivers, which join the Ganges at its northern and southern ends. To the south, the campus of Banaras Hindu University is laid out in a distinctive semicircular plan and forms one of the most geometric shapes on the map. Sarnath, where the Buddha is said to have given his first sermon, lies a short distance to the north.
Stone steps line the curving riverbank for several kilometres. They connect the dense old city to the Ganges and form the most famous edge of any Indian city.
Across the river, the far bank is mostly sand and floodplain. The empty space makes the curve of the built western bank especially striking on the map.
Banaras Hindu University is laid out in a large semicircle south of the old city. Its concentric roads form a perfect geometric shape within the urban grid.

Koteā ko Varanasi
Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a place of deep meaning for millions of people. A map of its river crescent is a quiet way to remember a pilgrimage, a journey or a family home.
Personalise the title, for example with Kashi or Banaras, add a subtitle and coordinates, and choose from five styles. Paper and Sand give a warm tone. HD files cost $9, and printed posters are also available.
