Te mapa
Medan is the capital of North Sumatra and the largest city on Sumatra, set on the flat coastal plain near the Strait of Malacca. On a map the city stretches from south to north, with its historic centre inland and a long corridor of development running toward the port of Belawan on the coast, which lies within the city's boundaries.
Two rivers, the Deli and the Babura, wind through the centre and meet within the city, and many older streets follow their banks. The Kesawan area keeps a grid of shophouses and colonial-era buildings, and the Maimun Palace, built for the Sultan of Deli in the late nineteenth century, sits in its own grounds just south of the centre.
Medan grew rapidly in the late nineteenth century as the centre of a tobacco plantation economy, and the Deli name is still associated with that trade. A Medan map poster shows a city shaped by rivers and flat land, with dense older districts in the centre and broad newer areas reaching toward the sea.
Two winding rivers cross the city side by side before joining, adding fluid lines to a map that is otherwise dominated by straight roads and blocks.
The old commercial centre forms a compact grid of streets lined with shophouses, the most regular and historic part of the city plan.
A long corridor of roads and development runs north from the centre to the port, stretching the city's shape toward the Strait of Malacca.
