Te mapa
Merrick lies on the South Shore of Long Island, within the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County. On a map its structure is easy to read: east-west routes such as Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway cross the area, the Long Island Rail Road runs through it, and the residential streets between them form a steady, mostly regular suburban pattern.
The southern part of Merrick is where the map becomes most striking. Streets there end at straight canals dug to give homes access to the water, and beyond them lie salt marshes, channels and islands in the bay, with the barrier beach at Jones Beach on the far side. It is a landscape made as much of water as of land.
A Merrick map poster captures both halves of the hamlet: the ordered blocks of the northern and central neighbourhoods and the comb of canals and marshland to the south. In black and white, the contrast between the built grid and the irregular wetland is particularly strong, and the eye moves naturally from street to shore.
Long, straight canals reach inland from the bay between rows of houses, forming a comb-like pattern that is the most distinctive shape on the map.
South of the canals, salt marsh islands and winding channels break the water into irregular pieces, softening the edge of the suburban grid.
The railroad and major east-west roads cut across Merrick as long parallel lines, dividing the hamlet into clear horizontal bands.
