Te mapa
Mers el Kebir lies on the western side of the Bay of Oran, where a rocky headland shelters a deep natural anchorage. The name means great harbour in Arabic, and the map shows why: long breakwaters and quays enclose calm water below hills that rise sharply behind the shoreline. The town sits on a narrow strip between the sea and the slopes.
The harbour has been a strategic site for centuries, fortified by the Spanish and later developed into a major French naval base. In July 1940, the British fleet attacked French warships at anchor here to keep them out of German hands, one of the best-known events of the Mediterranean war. Today the port remains an important Algerian naval facility.
A Mers el Kebir map poster is shaped by the meeting of rock and water. Streets climb in switchbacks where the ground allows, the coast road follows the bay toward Oran, and the harbour works form strong geometric lines against the irregular coastline. It is a small place with a clear, dramatic outline.
Breakwaters and quays close off a deep basin under the headland, the geometric centre of the map and the reason the town exists.
Behind the shore the land rises quickly, forcing streets into bends and short terraces that contrast with the straight lines of the port.
A coastal route follows the curve of the bay east toward Oran, linking the harbour town to the city across the water.
