Te mapa
Minakuchichō-matoba is part of Minakuchi, the central district of Kōka city in southern Shiga Prefecture. Minakuchi grew as a post station on the Tōkaidō, the historic highway between Edo and Kyoto, and the old route can still be traced on the map as a long, slightly winding street that the rest of the town gathers around.
The layout is typical of a Japanese valley town. Houses and shops line the old road and its side streets, the railway runs close by, and beyond the built-up area the map breaks into the small, regular rectangles of rice paddies. Wooded hills rise at the edges, so the settlement feels contained, a band of streets within a green valley floor.
Minakuchi was also a castle town in the Edo period, and the site of its castle is marked by a moated enclosure near the centre. A Minakuchichō-matoba map poster shows how highway, castle and farmland fit together at a small scale, a quieter counterpart to the better-known stops along the same road.
The historic highway runs through town as a narrow, gently bending street, still the backbone of the older district and easy to follow from one side of the print to the other.
Near the centre, the remains of Minakuchi Castle appear as a squared-off enclosure with a moat, a precise geometric form among the finer grain of surrounding houses.
Around the town, rice fields divide the land into small rectangles, giving the edges of the map a quiet, almost textile quality that contrasts with the denser streets.

Koteā ko Minakuchichō-matoba
This map appeals to people who have lived or studied in Kōka, and to walkers who have followed the Tōkaidō station by station. It records a small, specific stretch of that route in a form calm enough for a study or hallway.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, so you might use the old post-town name or a date. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and download the files or order a print.
