Montana lies in north-western Bulgaria, where the plain begins to rise toward the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. The Ogosta River runs past the town, and just upstream the Ogosta Reservoir spreads across the valley as a large body of water. From above, the town is a compact mix of older streets and regular blocks of socialist-era housing, with roads leading out across rolling farmland.
The town's name goes back to its Roman roots: a settlement called Montanensium stood here, and remains of a fortress have been found on the hill above the centre. In the twentieth century the town was renamed several times, known for a period as Ferdinand and later as Mihaylovgrad, before it became Montana again in 1993.

The site of the ancient fortress rises above the centre, a green, open area that breaks up the street pattern and marks the oldest layer of the town.
