Te mapa
Motherwell stands on rising ground east of the River Clyde, in North Lanarkshire. To the west, the land drops to the river, which loops through wide meadows. Strathclyde Country Park occupies much of this valley floor, and its large man-made loch is the biggest body of water on the map. The M74 and M8 approach from the west and north, so the town is surrounded by major transport routes.
For most of the twentieth century Motherwell was known for its steel industry, especially the Ravenscraig works, which closed in 1992. The large site on the eastern side of town has been gradually redeveloped since then. The town is also home to Motherwell Football Club, which plays at Fir Park, and to the Roman remains of a bathhouse found within the country park.
A Motherwell map poster shows the dense street network of the town centre and its housing estates, the railway lines leading toward Glasgow, and the open valley of the Clyde with the smooth outline of Strathclyde Loch. It captures both the town's industrial history and its green western edge.
The long loch in Strathclyde Country Park is the largest shape on the map, a clean, elongated form lying in the Clyde valley west of town.
The river curves through open meadows on the western side, separating Motherwell from Hamilton and giving the composition a natural boundary.
The land of the former steelworks to the east is now being redeveloped, and new streets are appearing where the industrial buildings once stood.
