Muhanga, long known as Gitarama, is a town in Rwanda's Southern Province, west of Kigali. Like much of the country, it is set among steep hills, and from above its roads rarely run straight. They follow ridgelines and contours, dropping into valleys and climbing again, so the map looks more like a set of branching lines than a grid.
The town sits on the main road that links Kigali with the south of the country, and that route forms the clearest spine on the map. Around it, the built-up area spreads along the higher ground, while the valleys between are left largely to farmland and wetland, visible as open spaces that break up the street pattern.
