Te mapa
Muntilan lies on the main road between Yogyakarta and Magelang, and from above the town follows that corridor closely. Houses, shops and schools line the highway and the lanes that branch off it, with rice fields pressing in on both sides. Several rivers coming down from the slopes of Mount Merapi cut across the area in deep, winding channels. They give the map a series of strong diagonal lines.
The town has a special place in the history of Christianity in Java. The Jesuit missionary Frans van Lith founded schools here in the early twentieth century, and Muntilan is sometimes called the Bethlehem of Java for that reason. The temples of Borobudur and Mendut are a short distance to the west, so Muntilan is a familiar stop on the Kedu plain.
A Muntilan map poster shows a town shaped by its setting. The central road runs through it, the river valleys carry volcanic sediment down from Merapi, and a patchwork of village lanes fades into farmland. It is a quiet, precise image of a place many people pass through on the way to somewhere more famous.
The main highway runs through town from south-east to north-west. Most of the built-up area gathers along it, so the road forms the spine of the map.
Rivers draining the volcano cross the plain in winding valleys. Their paths were shaped by the sand and debris carried down in past eruptions.
Beyond the centre, small village clusters sit among irrigated fields. The streets thin out into scattered lanes instead of stopping at a hard edge.
