Neukirchen-Vluyn lies on the Lower Rhine, west of Moers, in the district of Wesel. As the double name suggests, the town grew from two separate places, Neukirchen and Vluyn. On a map you can still see both centres, each with its own cluster of streets, joined by later housing across the flat ground between them.
In the twentieth century, coal mining shaped the town. Housing estates for miners were laid out in orderly rows, and the former colliery site left a clear mark on the landscape. These planned districts look quite different from the older, more irregular village lanes.
