Te mapa
New Glasgow lies in Pictou County in northern Nova Scotia, and the East River organises its plan, running north through the town toward Pictou Harbour. The downtown sits close to the water, with streets climbing the slopes on either side and bridges tying the two banks together. It belongs to a close cluster of towns that also includes Stellarton, Trenton and Westville.
Scottish settlers gave the town its name, and the county's identity remains closely tied to that heritage. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the area was a centre of coal mining, steelmaking and shipbuilding, and the traces of that industrial past are still readable on the map in rail lines, riverside lots and the practical, compact layout of the older neighbourhoods.
Today the Trans-Canada Highway passes just south of the centre, its long curve marking the outer edge of the built-up area. A New Glasgow map poster shows the river as a clear central line, the grid of streets on its banks, and the neighbouring towns that together form one of the main urban areas of northern Nova Scotia.
The river runs through the middle of the town, dividing it into east and west sides and giving the map a strong central axis.
Several crossings link the two banks, short straight lines that stitch the downtown together across the water.
Stellarton, Trenton and Westville lie within a few kilometres, and a wider frame shows how the towns merge along roads and the river valley.
