Te mapa
New Halfa lies on the flat plains of Kassala state in eastern Sudan, in an area turned to farmland by irrigation from the Atbara River. From above, the town follows a clear planned grid, surrounded by rectangular fields and canals that extend across the plain. The straight lines of streets and irrigation channels give the whole area a strongly geometric look.
The town was built in the 1960s to resettle Nubian families from Wadi Halfa, whose homes along the Nile were flooded by the reservoir behind Egypt's Aswan High Dam. The Khashm el Girba dam on the Atbara was built to supply the irrigation scheme that supports farming, including sugar cane, around the new town.
A New Halfa map poster shows a place made on purpose: a regular town grid, fields laid out in blocks and canals crossing the land in long, straight lines. It is a map with a story of displacement and rebuilding, rendered here simply and without ornament.
The town's streets follow a regular pattern of blocks, reflecting its origin as a planned resettlement town rather than a place that grew over time.
Long, straight canals and channels run across the surrounding plain, carrying water from the Atbara and dividing the land into orderly sections.
Rectangular agricultural plots surround the town, giving the edges of the map an even, measured texture.
