Al Manāqil lies in Al Jazirah state in Sudan, on the flat plain between the Blue and White Niles. From above, the town is compact, with a market centre and residential blocks laid out on a loose grid. What makes the map remarkable is the land around it: an almost perfectly regular network of canals and field boundaries stretching in every direction.
This is the country of the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in the world, built in the twentieth century to grow cotton. The area around Al Manāqil was added in a major expansion known as the Managil Extension. Main canals, branch canals and field channels form a hierarchy of straight lines that turn the plain into a vast grid.
