Salt ponds and marsh

Te mapa
Newark sits on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in Alameda County, almost entirely surrounded by the city of Fremont. On the map it forms a compact grid of residential streets, cul-de-sacs and commercial strips, with the edge of the bay to the west dissolving into a patchwork of salt ponds and tidal marshland.
The approach to the Dumbarton Bridge passes along the western side of the city, carrying traffic across the southern bay toward the Peninsula. Much of the shoreline beyond the built-up area belongs to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, whose ponds and sloughs form a geometric pattern of levees visible from the air.
Newark was incorporated in 1955 and grew quickly as housing spread through the East Bay. A Newark map poster captures that postwar layout: curving residential loops, long arterial roads, rail lines crossing through, and the sharp transition from suburban blocks to the flat, watery edge of the bay.
West of the city, rectangular evaporation ponds and winding sloughs form a mosaic of water and levees that reads almost like an abstract pattern on the map.
The highway heads west out of the city toward the bridge, a straight line cutting through marshland before crossing the open water of the southern bay.
Residential neighbourhoods are laid out in curving streets and cul-de-sacs, giving large parts of the city a looping, organic texture between the straighter arterial roads.

Koteā ko Newark
Newark is a place people settle into, raise families in and commute from, so its map often marks a first home or a long chapter of life in the Bay Area. The marsh edge makes the composition unusually graphic.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised, for example with a street name and moving-in date. Pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to match your space.
