Te mapa
Newquay lies on the north coast of Cornwall, facing the Atlantic. From above its shape is set by the sea: a series of sandy bays divided by rocky headlands, a small harbour tucked beneath the cliffs and the long tidal inlet of the Gannel estuary marking the town's southern edge. Streets climb back from the cliffs in terraces and crescents.
Towan Head juts out to the west, sheltering Fistral Beach on one side and the harbour on the other. Fistral is one of the best-known surf beaches in Britain and has made Newquay a centre of the sport. Before surfing, the town lived from pilchard fishing, and the white Huer's Hut on the headland recalls the lookouts who once watched for the shoals.
A Newquay map poster is dominated by its coastline. Beaches, headlands and the estuary make a varied, irregular edge, while the grid of Victorian and later streets fills the land behind. The contrast between the open Atlantic and the tightly built town gives the print a strong, clear structure.
The headland reaching into the Atlantic separates Fistral Beach from the harbour and gives the map its most distinctive point, framing the town between two bodies of water.
Fistral, Towan, Great Western, Tolcarne and other beaches line the shore in sequence, each divided from the next by cliffs, forming a scalloped coastline.
South of town the Gannel estuary winds inland, its tidal channel and sandbanks marking a soft boundary between Newquay and the countryside to the south.
