Te mapa
Nikumaroro is a small atoll in the Phoenix Islands of Kiribati, far from any other inhabited land. On a map it is a narrow, elongated ring of coral islets enclosing a central lagoon, with a wide reef flat around the outside and passages where lagoon and ocean meet. For many years it was known as Gardner Island.
The atoll was settled in the late 1930s as part of the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme, and a small village was established there, but the colonists left in the early 1960s and it has been uninhabited since. On the reef lies the wreck of the SS Norwich City, a steamer that ran aground in 1929.
Nikumaroro is best known for a long-running hypothesis that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan may have landed here after disappearing in 1937, a theory investigated by several expeditions but never confirmed. A Nikumaroro map poster shows the atoll as a quiet ring in the ocean, a shape that holds far more story than its size suggests.
A long lagoon fills the middle of the atoll, its outline echoing the ring of land around it and giving the map a clean, concentric form.
The reef on the western side, where the steamer ran aground in 1929, marks the edge of the atoll most discussed by researchers and expeditions.
Gaps in the ring connect lagoon and open ocean, breaking the rim into separate islets and adding rhythm to an otherwise continuous outline.

Koteā ko Nikumaroro
Aviation enthusiasts, readers of Earhart history and collectors of remote places often choose this atoll. Its ring shape is simple enough to read from across a room, yet precise enough to reward a close look at the reef and passages.
