Te mapa
Guadalcanal is the largest island of the Solomon Islands. On the map it forms a long, broad oblong, running from north-west to south-east. A high mountain spine runs close to the southern coast, rising to Mount Popomanaseu, the highest point in the country. The northern side falls to wider plains crossed by rivers flowing north to the sea.
Honiara, the national capital, lies along this northern shore. Its streets are strung out in a thin line between the hills and the sea, and the coastal highway continues east and west beyond it. The airport east of the city grew from Henderson Field, the airstrip at the centre of the Guadalcanal campaign of 1942 and 1943.
The sea north of the island, between Guadalcanal and the Florida Islands, is known as Iron Bottom Sound for the many warships sunk there during that campaign. A Guadalcanal map poster shows the contrast with the south side, the Weather Coast. There, steep slopes fall almost directly into the sea and roads are almost absent.
The capital stretches in a narrow band along the northern shore. On the print it forms the island's main cluster of streets.
A high range runs near the southern coast, rising to Mount Popomanaseu. It leaves most of the interior without roads.
The steep, exposed southern shore, where mountains drop into the sea. It is the emptiest part of the map, with very few settlements.

Koteā ko Guadalcanal
Guadalcanal matters to people who grew up in Honiara and to families connected to the Pacific campaign. The long island, with its settled north and wild south, makes a strong, simple composition.
