Te mapa
Choiseul Island lies in the northwest of the Solomon Islands, just southeast of Bougainville. On a map it is a long, narrow shape running from northwest to southeast. A mountainous, densely forested spine runs down its length, with rivers draining to both coasts. Reefs, mangroves and small islands fringe the shoreline, especially in the northwest, where the coast breaks into lagoons and channels.
The French navigator Bougainville named the island in 1768 after the Duc de Choiseul, a minister of Louis XV. It is now the heart of Choiseul Province. The small provincial capital, Taro, sits on an island just off the northwestern end, and its airstrip is the main link to the rest of the country.
Most people live in coastal villages and there are few roads, so on the map the interior is largely blank, shaded only by relief. A Choiseul Island map poster shows that pattern clearly: villages scattered along the edges, forest in the middle, and a lacework of reef and islets around the shore.
A range of forested hills runs down the length of the island and divides the two coasts. The map shows a clear central ridge, with rivers falling away on each side.
The provincial capital sits on a small island off the northwestern tip, and its airstrip takes up much of the land. It appears as a neat, compact mark on the map.
Reefs, mangroves and scattered islets fringe much of the shoreline. On the map the island's edge is intricate and layered rather than a single clean line.
