Te mapa
Rennell is one of the largest raised coral atolls in the world, lifted well above the sea so that its old lagoon became dry land and a lake. On a map it appears as an elongated island in the southern Solomon Islands, its coast unusually smooth and steep, with few inlets. The outline is simple, which makes the features inside it stand out all the more.
The eastern part of the island holds Lake Tegano, the largest lake in the insular Pacific, which is scattered with small limestone islets. That area, East Rennell, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998. On paper the lake reads as a second coastline inside the first, an unusual effect for an island of any size.
A Rennell Island map poster has very little road network to show, and that is part of its character. The island is a Polynesian outlier within the mostly Melanesian Solomons, and its settlements are small and dispersed. What remains is the relationship between cliff-edged land, open ocean and an inland body of brackish water, drawn in clean monochrome lines.
The lake fills much of the eastern end of the island, its shoreline indented and dotted with islets, forming the most intricate part of the whole map.
Former reef lifted high above sea level gives Rennell a steep, even coastline with few bays, so the island's edge reads as one firm, continuous line.
East Rennell, including the lake and surrounding forest, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its customary landowners manage the land and its resources.

Koteā ko Rennell Island
Rennell appeals to people who like geography that tells its own story: an atoll that rose from the sea and kept its lagoon as a lake. It suits studies and reading corners, and it is a quiet reminder for anyone who has worked or travelled in the Solomons.
Add a title and subtitle of your choosing and adjust the coordinates line to mark the lake or a village. The five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, let the same outline feel either scientific or soft.
