Te mapa
Nishinoomote is the largest town on Tanegashima, an island south of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture. It covers the northern part of the long, narrow island, and its centre lies on the west coast around the harbour that connects Tanegashima with Kagoshima. On a map, the town forms a compact grid near the port, with farmland and forest spreading across the rest of the island.
Tanegashima holds an important place in Japanese history. In 1543 Portuguese traders who reached the island brought the first firearms to Japan, and early Japanese guns became known as tanegashima. Nishinoomote has a museum devoted to this history. The island is also known for the space centre at its southern end, far from the town but part of its identity.
The coastline around Nishinoomote runs straight in some stretches and is indented in others, with small bays and beaches. A Nishinoomote map poster shows a harbour town, its streets and the open sea around it. It captures the feel of an island where every road eventually leads to the water or to the fields.
The port on the west coast anchors the map, with a compact grid of streets rising from the waterfront into the town's residential areas.
The shoreline of northern Tanegashima frames the map, alternating between straighter stretches and small bays that break the line of the coast.
Inland from the town, a patchwork of fields and wooded areas covers the flat to rolling ground, crossed by quiet rural roads.

Koteā ko Nishinoomote
Nishinoomote connects history, island life and the sea. A map of the town suits people from Tanegashima, visitors who came for the surf or a rocket launch, and anyone curious about the island where firearms first reached Japan.
