Nowgong lies in Chhatarpur district in northern Madhya Pradesh, within the historic region of Bundelkhand and close to the border with Uttar Pradesh. The town grew around a British military cantonment in the nineteenth century, and that origin still shapes its plan. On the map, wide straight roads and generous plots in the old cantonment area sit beside a denser market town.
The contrast between these two parts is the most interesting thing about Nowgong from above. The cantonment side is spacious and geometric, with roads meeting at clear angles. The bazaar and older residential quarters form a tighter, more irregular network.
