Te mapa
Oak Ridge was built from scratch in 1942 as a secret city for the Manhattan Project, and it still looks planned on a map. Residential streets curve along the valleys and slopes of the ridges that give the city its name, while the Clinch River loops around the southern and western edges.
The landscape runs in long parallel bands, typical of the ridge-and-valley country of East Tennessee. Neighbourhoods follow the contours, and main roads run along the valley floors. Large, separate complexes, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 site, sit apart from the town, surrounded by forest.
An Oak Ridge map poster shows how geography and wartime secrecy shaped a city. Once left off public maps, it is now known for its scientific research and its history, and its ridges, river and curving streets make a distinctive print.
The Clinch River winds around the city in wide bends, giving the map a flowing natural border on the south and west.
Parallel ridges run southwest to northeast, and streets follow them, so the whole city leans in one clear direction.
Laboratory and plant complexes sit apart in the forest, linked by long roads, a legacy of the city's wartime layout.
