Oelde lies in the east of the Münsterland, in the flat, green farming country of northern North Rhine-Westphalia. On a map the historic centre forms a small, rounded core of streets, with newer housing spreading outward and farmland beginning just beyond.
The main railway line between the Ruhr and Hanover cuts across the town, a straight, strong line in the design. Oelde is also home to industrial firms whose plant sites show as larger blocks on the edge of the residential streets.
