Te mapa
Dortmund lies at the eastern end of the Ruhr, and at the centre of its map is a clear ring. The Wallring follows the line of the old city walls, enclosing a compact core of shopping streets and churches. Beyond it, the city spreads in every direction, with rail lines, parks and former industrial land breaking up the blocks. To the northwest, the canal port connects to the Dortmund–Ems Canal.
Once a Hanseatic city and later a centre of coal, steel and brewing, Dortmund has turned many of its former industrial sites into new neighbourhoods. The best known is Phoenix-See, a lake created on the site of a former steelworks. The city is also home to Borussia Dortmund, whose stadium stands south of the centre near Westfalenpark.
A Dortmund map poster puts the ring at the heart of the design, with the inner city clearly marked and the rest of the city spreading around it. The canal port adds straight basins in the north, while Phoenix-See and the large parks bring open shapes to the south. The overall composition is balanced and clearly centred.

Straight harbour basins in the northwest mark where the Dortmund–Ems Canal ends, one of the largest canal ports in Europe.
