The Wupper valley
The river threads the full length of the city. Its bends set the course of the main roads, the railway and the suspended railway, and everything else falls into place around them.

Te mapa
Few German cities have a shape as distinctive as Wuppertal's. The town was formed in 1929 by joining Elberfeld, Barmen and several neighbouring towns, and it stretches for kilometres along the narrow valley of the Wupper. From above, it's a long, thin band of streets hemmed in by hillsides. Residential quarters climb up both sides in terraces, stairways and switchback roads.
Over the river runs the Schwebebahn, a suspended railway that opened in 1901. Its route follows the Wupper for most of its length, so the town's main axis, its river and its transit line are almost the same line on the map. Elberfeld and Barmen still read as two separate centres along that line, linked by continuous development.
A Wuppertal map poster rewards a wide format. The panoramic, east-west shape fills a landscape sheet naturally, and the contrast between the dense valley floor and the looser streets on the heights gives the print depth. Friedrich Engels was born in Barmen, and Pina Bausch built her dance theatre here, which gives the city an unexpected cultural weight for its size.
The river threads the full length of the city. Its bends set the course of the main roads, the railway and the suspended railway, and everything else falls into place around them.
The suspended railway follows the Wupper for much of its route. On the map, the river line and the transit line nearly overlap through the valley.
On both slopes, curving lanes and stepped paths climb steeply. They form finer, looser patterns than the tight grid of the valley floor below.

Koteā ko Wuppertal
Wuppertal suits anyone who has ridden the Schwebebahn, studied at the university on the hill or grown up in Elberfeld or Barmen. It is a city you recognise instantly by its outline.
Add a street name, a year or the coordinates of a family home to the title lines. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir makes the thin valley stand out especially sharply.
