Te mapa
Ōmuta sits at the southern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture, on the eastern shore of the Ariake Sea, facing its wide tidal flats. For more than a century the city was built around the Miike coal mine, once the largest in Japan. Railways, factories and port facilities connected pits to the harbour, and the city's layout still follows many of those industrial routes.
Several Miike sites, including Miike Port, Manda Pit and Miyanohara Pit, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution. The port's lock gate, built to keep ships afloat despite the sea's very large tides, still operates today and is one of the city's defining features.
An Ōmuta map poster shows a city between hills and shore. The coast is sharply engineered, with the port basin and reclaimed land forming angular shapes against the sea. Inland, the grid spreads into a softer residential pattern that climbs toward the green hills along the Kumamoto border.
The enclosed port basin with its lock gate forms a precise angular shape on the shoreline, designed to handle the Ariake Sea's extreme tides.
Former coal railway lines and factory sites leave long corridors and large parcels across the city, legible traces of its mining past.
The coast runs along wide tidal flats, and reclaimed land and seawalls give the western edge of the city firm, geometric lines.

Koteā ko Ōmuta
Ōmuta holds strong memories for families whose lives were tied to the mines and the port. The map is a quiet tribute to that industrial heritage and suits anyone interested in how industry shapes a city.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, including in Japanese if you wish. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the city's engineering history particularly well.
