Orta Nova sits in the province of Foggia, on the Tavoliere delle Puglie, one of the largest plains in southern Italy. From above, the town is a dense cluster of blocks with open farmland all around it. Country roads leave the edge of the built-up area in long, nearly straight lines, and the fields between them form a patchwork of rectangular plots.
The town's history is tied to the Bourbon kingdom of Naples. In the late eighteenth century, Orta Nova became one of the Cinque Reali Siti, a group of five agricultural settlements on the Tavoliere that were placed under royal administration. That history of planned farming still shows on the map, which has an orderly look quite different from the tangled hill towns elsewhere in southern Italy.
