Straight River
Despite its name, the river bends and winds through town, a gentle curving line that contrasts with the regular street grid on either side.

Te mapa
Owatonna is the seat of Steele County in southern Minnesota, set on the gently rolling farmland that covers much of the state's south. The Straight River runs through the town from south to north, and on a map its narrow, winding course is one of the few curves breaking up an otherwise orderly grid of streets.
The town is well known among architecture enthusiasts for the National Farmers' Bank, designed by Louis Sullivan and completed in 1908. Often described as one of his jewel box banks, it remains a landmark of early American modernism in the heart of downtown.
An Owatonna map poster shows a classic Midwestern pattern: a central business district of square blocks, residential streets extending in regular lines, and newer development spreading outward toward the interstate. The river and a few parks add softer shapes, and the balance between order and water is what gives the composition its character.
Despite its name, the river bends and winds through town, a gentle curving line that contrasts with the regular street grid on either side.
Downtown is home to the National Farmers' Bank, designed by Louis Sullivan and completed in 1908, a celebrated example of his ornamental commercial architecture.
Streets form a clear rectangular grid typical of Midwestern towns, with blocks extending evenly from the centre across level to gently rolling ground.
