Te mapa
Sioux Falls takes its name and much of its shape from the Big Sioux River. The river makes a long, looping bend around downtown, then drops over a series of pink quartzite falls. From above, it draws a large, irregular ring through the city. A continuous greenway with a recreation trail lines much of its course.
Downtown sits inside the loop in a regular grid of streets. The same orderly pattern extends across the prairie in every direction, broken by parks, golf courses and the curving streets of newer subdivisions. Interstate 29 runs along the western side of the city and Interstate 90 passes to the north. Interstate 229 traces a partial ring through the south and east.
Falls Park, just north of downtown, is the city's best-known landmark, where the river cascades over broad ledges of rock. Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota, has grown steadily outward. A Sioux Falls map poster captures the balance between the winding river and the straight lines of a prairie grid.
The river bends in a wide arc around downtown. It is the most recognisable natural shape on the map and ties together a chain of riverside parks.
North of downtown, the river spills over pink quartzite ledges. These are the falls that gave the city its name and drew its first settlers.
Straight streets run to the horizon in all directions. I-29, I-90 and I-229 form a bold frame around the city.
