Pathalgaon is a town in Jashpur district in northern Chhattisgarh, on the uplands near the borders of Jharkhand and Odisha. From above, the town gathers along its main roads, with a denser market area at the centre and houses thinning into fields, open ground and patches of forest.
Jashpur district is largely rural and forested, with a substantial Adivasi population, and Pathalgaon serves as a trading and transit point for the surrounding villages. Its location on regional roads is the key to its layout, since the town has grown out from the junction rather than around a planned centre.
