Te mapa
Pen is a town in Raigad district, Maharashtra, between the Konkan coast and the foothills of the Western Ghats, a couple of hours south of Mumbai. The Mumbai–Goa highway passes through it. From above, the town is a dense core of lanes beside the Bhogawati River, with newer streets spreading along the main roads.
Pen is known across India for its Ganesh idols. Many workshops in and around the town make clay and plaster figures of Ganesh each year for the festival, and a large share of them travel to Mumbai and far beyond. The trade gives the town its own rhythm, with activity building through the months before Ganeshotsav.
A Pen map poster captures the old town's tight network of streets, the river winding past it and the straight line of the highway. Creeks, fields and low hills fill the edges of the frame, marking the transition from coastal lowland to the Sahyadri range. In monochrome, the river and the highway give the composition two strong lines.
The historic centre of Pen is a dense web of narrow lanes and small blocks, where many of the town's idol workshops and markets are found.
The river curves past the town, a natural line that softens the map and separates the older core from the surrounding fields.
The highway cuts through Pen as a long, direct line, tying this Konkan town to Mumbai in the north and the coast to the south.
