Penja lies in Cameroon's Littoral Region, in the Moungo area inland from Douala. From above, the town stretches along the main road through the valley, with streets branching off into neighbourhoods on either side. It is a linear, practical layout shaped by the route that connects Douala with the towns and farmland to the north.
Around the town, large plantations and smallholdings cover the ground, their blocks and tracks forming a distinct grid on the map. The soil here is volcanic and famously fertile, and the rows of banana plantations and other crops stand out as regular patterns next to the looser streets of the town. Hills and forested slopes rise further off.
Penja is best known for its white pepper, which grows on these volcanic soils and has earned a protected geographical indication, among the first for an African product.
