Penukonda Map Poster & Print
Penukonda lies in the Sri Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh, on the dry Rayalaseema plateau. Its name means big hill in Telugu, and the map makes the reason clear: a rocky granite height rises beside the town, its slopes carrying old fortifications. The streets below cluster tightly at its foot, and roads lead out across open, rock-strewn countryside.
In the sixteenth century Penukonda was an important stronghold of the Vijayanagara Empire, and after the battle of Talikota in 1565 the rulers made it their capital for a time. Remains of that period are scattered through the town, including the Gagan Mahal palace and several temples, and sections of old walls and gateways still shape the lanes of the historic core.
Today the town is also known for a very different reason: a large car plant built nearby by Kia in the late 2010s, which has brought new roads and development to the area. Historic core
Narrow lanes gather at the foot of the hill, partly shaped by old walls and gateways. This dense area holds the Gagan Mahal and temples of the Vijayanagara period.
Highway corridor
The national highway between Bengaluru and Hyderabad passes near the town. Its straight course and the development along it form a modern counterpoint to the old streets.
