Te mapa
Peterlee is a new town in County Durham, in the north-east of England, designated in 1948 to bring housing and services to the surrounding mining villages. Seen from above, it is a planned place: curving residential roads and cul-de-sacs grouped into neighbourhoods, a town centre at the middle, and green corridors threading between the estates.
A Peterlee map poster shows a very different pattern from an old market town. There is no medieval core; instead the streets loop and branch in the manner of mid-century planning, with the A19 running along the western side and the coastline a short distance to the east. Wooded valleys, known locally as denes, cut through the land toward the sea.
The town is named after Peter Lee, a Durham miners' leader and trade unionist. It is also known for the Apollo Pavilion, a concrete structure designed by the artist Victor Pasmore that spans a small lake in the Sunny Blunts estate. To the south, Castle Eden Dene is a nature reserve of ancient woodland in a steep-sided ravine.

Wooded ravines run through and around the town toward the coast, with Castle Eden Dene to the south forming a long green channel on the map.
Victor Pasmore's concrete pavilion bridges a small lake within a housing estate, a modernist landmark set among the town's gently curving streets.

Koteā ko Peterlee
Peterlee means something specific to families shaped by the Durham coalfield and to anyone who grew up in its estates. The flowing street pattern makes a map that feels both familiar and quietly graphic.
