Te mapa
Petrodvorets, better known as Peterhof, lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, west of Saint Petersburg. It is famous for the palace and parks founded by Peter the Great in the early eighteenth century. From above, the formal layout is unmistakable: the Grand Palace on a terrace, the Grand Cascade below it, and the Sea Channel running straight down to the water.
The Lower Park spreads along the shore in a pattern of straight and diagonal avenues, with fountains and pavilions set along them. The Upper Garden sits above the palace on the landward side. The palace and park ensemble is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site for historic Saint Petersburg. The town itself extends beyond the parks, with residential streets inland.
A Petrodvorets map poster shows the geometry of a baroque garden as clearly as a plan. The symmetry around the Sea Channel, the fan of avenues and the straight coastline give the print a strong, formal composition. It works both as a memento of a visit and as a piece of garden design history.
A straight canal runs from the Grand Cascade below the palace down to the Gulf of Finland. It is the central axis of the whole park layout.
Straight and diagonal avenues cross the park along the shore, linking fountains and pavilions in a strictly geometric baroque pattern.
The coastline forms a long, clean edge along the northern side of the map, with the parks opening directly onto the water.
