Pichanal lies in the north of Salta province, in the warm lowlands east of the Andes where the Argentine northwest meets the Chaco. The town is laid out on the regular grid common to Argentine settlements, with square blocks and a central plaza, and roads leading off toward nearby towns.
Its position on National Route 34 makes it a stopping point on the road north toward the Bolivian border, and the surrounding land is heavily farmed.
