Te mapa
Potosí lies high in the Bolivian Andes, at around 4,000 metres, making it one of the highest cities in the world. On a map the centre is a regular Spanish colonial grid of streets and plazas, set on sloping ground below Cerro Rico, the cone-shaped mountain that rises to the south. Beyond the grid, streets become more irregular as they climb the hillsides.
The city was founded in 1545 after the discovery of silver in Cerro Rico, and it soon became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the Americas. Its silver helped finance the Spanish Empire. The Casa Nacional de Moneda, the royal mint, still stands in the centre, and the city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
A Potosí map poster sets the orderly colonial grid against the rugged ground around it. East of the city, the Kari Kari lagoons, built in colonial times to supply water for silver processing, appear as small dark shapes in the hills. In black and white, the print captures a city defined by one mountain.
The historic centre follows a regular grid of streets and plazas, with churches and the royal mint within a few blocks of each other.
The cone of the silver mountain rises south of the city, with mining roads and tracks winding across its slopes and around its base.
Artificial lakes in the hills east of the city were built to power the silver works and appear as small clear shapes on the map.
