Te mapa
La Paz is the seat of Bolivia's government and, at around 3,600 metres, the highest seat of government in the world. It fills a deep canyon cut into the edge of the Altiplano, with the city centre at the bottom and neighbourhoods climbing the steep walls. On the rim above sits El Alto, a separate city spread across the flat high plain.
The main avenue, known as El Prado, runs along the floor of the valley, following the course of the Choqueyapu River, much of which is now channelled underground. Streets branch off it and climb the slopes in zigzags and switchbacks, and the pattern of the map changes with altitude: denser and more regular at the bottom, looser and steeper toward the edges.
Since 2014 the Mi Teleférico cable car network has linked La Paz and El Alto, its lines crossing the canyon in straight strokes. To the southeast, Mount Illimani rises above the city. A La Paz map poster captures a place where geography dictates everything, from the lower, warmer Zona Sur to the high plateau above.
The city fills a steep-sided bowl below the Altiplano, its streets bending along the contours and giving the map a strong, almost topographic texture.
The main avenue follows the valley floor through the centre, the line from which the rest of the city climbs in every direction.
Mi Teleférico's cables run in straight lines across the canyon and up to El Alto, a modern layer drawn across an ancient terrain.

Koteā ko La Paz
La Paz leaves a strong impression on anyone who has seen it from the rim of the canyon. A map conveys that dramatic setting in a quiet way, and it means a great deal to Paceños living elsewhere in Bolivia or abroad.
