Te mapa
Arica is the northernmost city in Chile, set where the Atacama Desert meets the Pacific. The map is defined by a few strong forms: the long coastline running north toward Peru, the port and its breakwater, and the Morro de Arica, a steep headland rising straight above the southern end of the centre. Streets fan out from the base of the Morro toward the valleys inland.
The city is often called the city of eternal spring for its mild, almost rainless climate. Two river valleys, Azapa and Lluta, bring green farmland into an otherwise bare desert, and the Azapa valley is known for its olives and for archaeological finds linked to the Chinchorro culture, whose mummies are among the oldest known deliberately preserved human remains.
An Arica map poster shows a city with a clear sense of edge. The Pacific is a clean white or dark field along one side, the Morro a sudden blank in the streets, and the desert beyond an open expanse into which roads run almost without interruption. The central district, with its older plazas near the port, is compact and easy to trace.
The headland above the centre interrupts the street grid with a steep, empty mass, making it the single most recognisable feature on any map of the city.
Beaches and the working port line the western edge, with the coast running long and straight to the north, giving the composition a strong horizontal boundary.
East of the city a narrow green valley pushes into the desert, visible on the map as a ribbon of roads and farm tracks following the riverbed inland.

Koteā ko Arica
Arica has a shape that stays with people: the rock above the town, the ocean at the end of every western street, the desert behind. For anyone from the far north of Chile, or anyone who spent time there, it is a map that feels immediately familiar.
