Te mapa
Piła lies in northern Greater Poland on the Gwda River, which runs north–south through the middle of the town. On a map the river splits Piła into two clear halves, joined by several bridges. The centre sits close to the water, residential districts of apartment blocks and houses spread out on either side, and pine forest surrounds the town on almost every side, giving it a sharp outline.
The town was heavily damaged in 1945 and largely rebuilt afterward, so much of the central fabric dates from the postwar decades. Piła has long been an important railway junction, and several lines meet here. It is also the birthplace of Stanisław Staszic, the Enlightenment priest, scholar and reformer, whose family house is now a museum.
A Piła map poster shows the river's central line, the curving railway tracks and the ring of forest around the streets. The result is clear and balanced, with the Gwda as the anchor of the composition.
The river runs straight through the heart of Piła, dividing the town into two halves and giving the poster a strong central axis.
Several rail lines converge on the town. Their wide curves and yards form some of the largest shapes on the map, especially around the station.
Pine woods surround the town on nearly every side, so the edges of the street network are crisp and the built-up area reads as a compact whole.
