Szczecin grew up on the western bank of the Oder, near where the river breaks into a maze of channels, islands and the wide Lake Dąbie before running north into the Szczecin Lagoon. On the map, water covers almost as much ground as streets do, and the port basins and canals on the islands add a network of straight, industrial edges.
The city centre is known for its nineteenth-century layout of round squares with streets radiating out of them like stars, often compared to Paris. From above, these roundabouts and diagonal avenues form a pattern that is unusual in Poland. Above the river, the Chrobry Embankment rises in grand terraces.
