Plasencia Map Poster & Print
Plasencia sits in the north of Extremadura in western Spain, on raised ground above a bend in the Jerte River. The oldest part of the city is still defined by its medieval walls. On a map, their line forms a clear oval of narrow, irregular streets, with the river curving along the edge and newer districts spreading beyond.
The city was founded in the late twelfth century by King Alfonso VIII of Castile, and it grew into an important regional centre. It is known for having two cathedrals, an older Romanesque one and a newer Gothic and Renaissance one, built side by side. An old aqueduct once brought water into the city.
A Plasencia map poster shows all of this layering. The tight maze of the walled centre sits against the looser grid of later expansion, and the Jerte curls around the southern side. Jerte River
The river bends close to the old city. Its curve, and the bridges crossing it, set Plasencia on a natural site that shaped where and how the town was built.
