Te mapa
Plauen is the largest town in the Vogtland, in the south-west corner of Saxony, close to the borders with Bavaria and the Czech Republic. Its map is shaped by the White Elster, which cuts a valley through the town. The old centre sits on high ground above the river, and districts spread up the slopes on either side, so many streets curve to follow the terrain.
Bridges are important here. The Friedensbrücke, a wide stone arch bridge from the early twentieth century, carries traffic across the Syra valley near the centre, and other crossings link the two banks of the Elster. Railway lines follow the valleys, and the pattern of Wilhelminian-era blocks, older lanes and later housing shows the town's growth in layers.
Plauen is best known for its lace, Plauener Spitze, an industry that brought the town wealth around 1900. It also has a place in recent history: in October 1989 it saw one of the first large demonstrations in the GDR. A Plauen map poster captures a textile town in a river valley, drawn in lines as fine as its lace.

A large stone arch bridge crosses the Syra valley close to the centre. On the map it is a short, strong link between two parts of town.
Blocks from the textile boom around 1900 form a regular pattern of streets and courtyards, a clear contrast with the older core on the hill.
