Te mapa
Port Loko is the capital of Port Loko District in Sierra Leone's North West Province. As the name suggests, it grew as a landing on a tidal creek that flows toward the estuary near Freetown. On a map, the town sits on the waterway, with its streets following the higher ground beside the creek and roads leading inland.
For a long time the creek linked the interior with the coast, carrying people and goods between upcountry markets and the estuary. Today the main roads do more of that work, and they run out from the town toward other regional centres. Mangroves, wetlands and farmland soften the edges of the settlement where water and land meet.
The town is not large, and its layout reflects gradual growth more than formal planning, with irregular blocks and lanes branching off a few main roads. A Port Loko map poster puts the creek at the centre, showing how the place is tied to the water. The combination of meandering channels and simple road lines makes a clear, uncluttered print.
The creek that gave Port Loko its role as a port runs beside the town and draws a winding line that leads the eye toward the coast.
Main roads leave the town in several directions and connect it to other district centres, so on the map it looks like a hub with long spokes.
Low, marshy ground and mangrove fringes along the waterway loosen the town's edges and leave soft blank areas around the built-up core.
