Te mapa
Port Macquarie lies on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, where the Hastings River meets the Pacific. The river mouth defines the town on the map: a wide estuary to the north and west, a rock breakwall guiding the channel to the sea, and the town centre built on the southern bank beside it.
South of the centre the coastline becomes a chain of beaches and rocky headlands, running down toward Tacking Point and its small lighthouse. Residential streets climb inland from the shore in loose curves, broken by patches of bushland and reserves. Founded in 1821 as a penal settlement and named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie, it is one of the older towns in the state.
A Port Macquarie map poster brings these edges together: river, estuary islands, breakwall and ocean in one frame. In monochrome, the water becomes a pale surround and the town reads as a band of streets held between river and sea.
The estuary wraps around the northern side of town, with channels and low islands that give the map a soft, braided texture next to the grid of the centre.
A rock wall lines the river entrance, known locally for the painted rocks visitors decorate. On the map it is a crisp line pointing straight out to sea.
South of town the coast alternates between sandy beaches and rocky points down to Tacking Point, drawing a scalloped edge along the eastern side of the poster.
