Te mapa
Port Sudan lies on the western shore of the Red Sea, and its map is shaped by a natural harbour of long, branching inlets reaching inland from the coast. The city is arranged around this water, with quays, cranes and storage yards along the harbour edges and a regular grid of streets behind them, giving way to open desert and low hills farther inland.
The city was founded by the British in the early twentieth century as a new port to replace Suakin, the old coral-stone harbour to the south, whose approach was too shallow for modern ships. It quickly became Sudan's main outlet to the sea, and it still handles most of the country's foreign trade.
Coral reefs lie offshore, including Sanganeb, a marine national park with a lighthouse that draws divers from around the world. Since 2023, amid the war, the city has also served as the de facto seat of Sudan's government. A Port Sudan map poster captures a harbour town where coast, inlets and planned streets form a strong, clear shape.
The natural harbour reaches into the city in several arms, creating a distinctive pattern of water and quays at the centre of the map.
Streets behind the port are laid out in an orderly grid of blocks, reflecting the city's origin as a planned port settlement built from scratch in the early twentieth century.
The shoreline north and south of the city is edged by reefs and shallow water, adding fine detail to the map's coastal edge.
