Te mapa
Princesa Isabel sits in the far west of Paraíba, close to the border with Pernambuco, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. From above, the town is a compact block of streets. It thins quickly into ranch land, dirt roads and seasonal watercourses that only run in the rains.
The town is named after Princess Isabel of Brazil, the imperial heir best remembered for signing the 1888 law that abolished slavery in the country. The streets are mostly laid out in a grid, adjusted where the ground rises and falls. Roads lead out in several directions toward neighbouring municipalities across the dry plateau.
A Princesa Isabel map poster keeps the plain honesty of a country town. It shows a centre with its squares and church, blocks that loosen toward the edges, and then the wide rural surroundings. For people from the sertão who now live in João Pessoa, Recife or São Paulo, this outline is often the most direct way to show where they come from.
The oldest streets form a small, dense core that stands out clearly against the sparser ground around it. It is the natural focal point of the print.
Several roads leave town in different directions, cutting straight lines across the countryside. They give the sheet a loose, star-like structure.
Thin, winding streambeds cross the surrounding land. On a map they read as delicate curves that soften the geometry of the grid.
