Prior Lake lies in Scott County, southwest of Minneapolis. Its map is defined by water. Upper and Lower Prior Lake meet in the middle of the city, and their irregular shoreline is full of bays, peninsulas and narrow channels. Residential streets curve closely along the water and follow its every turn, so the town's shape is inseparable from the lakes.
The small downtown sits near the lakes on the main road through the area. Neighbourhoods of cul-de-sacs and loops spread out from it among wooded parks and smaller ponds. Farther from the water, the pattern opens into newer developments and some remaining farmland at the edge of the metro area.
