Pundong is a district in Bantul Regency, south of the city of Yogyakarta, in a landscape of rivers, rice fields and small villages. Its map is less a single town than a network of settlements. Village lanes branch from the main roads, and houses cluster in small groups separated by fields and green areas.
Rivers flowing south from the volcanic uplands toward the Indian Ocean shape the area, cutting valleys through the farmland. To the east, the land rises toward the hills of Gunungkidul. On a map, the result is a soft pattern of winding roads following the terrain, rather than any clear grid.
