Qarek is a settlement in Kashgar Prefecture in southwestern Xinjiang, on the western rim of the Tarim Basin. It is part of the long chain of oases at the foot of the Pamir and Kunlun ranges. Here, rivers fed by mountain snowmelt make farming possible at the edge of the Taklamakan Desert.
From above, the town is a modest core of streets surrounded by a detailed farming landscape. Irrigation channels branch outward in long straight lines and divide the ground into narrow rectangular fields, while village roads follow the canals. The result is a map where the countryside carries as much detail as the town itself.
A Qarek map poster is an uncommon object: a close portrait of a place that rarely appears on printed maps. For families from the southern Xinjiang oases, it is a quiet record of home, drawn with the same care a major city would receive. It also works simply as a graphic image, all fine lines and repetition.
Irrigation channels run across the land in long, straight lines. They carry meltwater to the oasis and give the map a strong linear structure.
Narrow rectangular fields around the town form a repeating pattern. It fills much of the frame and looks almost like a textile design in black and white.
Beyond the cultivated belt lies the open ground of the Tarim Basin. The oasis takes its shape from how far the water can reach.

Oasis towns are defined by the line between water and dry land, and that line is what makes this map compelling. It means a lot to anyone from the region and is a striking piece for anyone who is not.
